Weekly Reflection

WEEK 1

For the first week of the final major project we were tasked with creating a pitch we are supposed to present, of how we developed our ideas. Unfortunately, I was very confused about this pitch as we were told different things by different teachers, leaving me not knowing what to do for my pitch. Luckily, I was told on Tuesday exactly what to do for the pitch helping me understand what to write on the slides. I spent the rest of the week working on my pitch.

WEEK 2

In the second week of my final major project, I worked a lot more on my pitch. I actually managed to complete my pitch in the second week of the FMP, so it gave me quite a bit of time to practise what I was going to say for my pitch. I went over it with some of my peers to get their thoughts on my pitch. Doing this allowed me make improvements to my pitch. Hopefully next week I will manage to present my pitch efficiently to the tutors, allowing me to get a good grade.

WEEK 3

In the third week of my final major project, It was the week where we had to present our pitch to the tutors. Luckily, I had prepared for the pitch so I felt confident whilst presenting it. An improvement I could have made was explaining my slides in a bit more detail. I received a Q&A from the tutors I was presenting my pitch to, they suggested some possible ideas and improvements I could make to my idea. I made sure to listen to all of these ideas and apply some of them to my final major project.

WEEK 4

In the fourth week of my final major project, I started working on the research section of my FMP. I managed to get two sections of my research done before I ran into an issue with my site. That issue was that my site would lock up whenever I wanted to add pages to my blog. Not only this but I was unable to edit the pages, as it said they didn’t exist. I ended up having to create a new site which has set my back a bit in my FMP.

WEEK 5

In the fifth week of my final major project, I worked more on the research section of my project some more. I still didn’t manage to get my research done in this week, because I was ill on the Tuesday. Although I was ill, I still managed to get some work on my research done at home whilst I was ill. On the final day I kept working on the research. Hopefully next week I can manage to get my research fully done so I can move onto the design section of my final major project.

WEEK 6

In the sixth week of my final major project, it unfortunately started quite poorly due to the fact I had an issue on the first day of the week preventing me from coming into college. Luckily, I managed to get a lot of work done at home and ended up completing an entire research section on ART STYLES. On the second day I was better and was able to come into college, allowing me to get work done on moodboards for my research. I ended the week on Wednesday by doing the same thing I did on Tuesday, gradually getting more and more research done. Unfortunately I did not manage to get my research done this week but, hopefully next week I can manage to get all of my research done allowing me to focus on the design section.

WEEK 7

On the seventh week of my final major project, I focused specifically on my research section as I felt like I was behind on this project. (I spent too long doing the research for my final major project). Thankfully, I managed to get all of my research just about finished on Monday which allowed me to move onto the design section of my project. I feel as if Monday went well in terms of getting work done, because I managed to get a lot done within the time frame. On the Tuesday, I fully moved onto the design section of my project and started creating concept art of the environment I plan on making for my final major project. I plan on getting more concept art completed and hopefully my entire design section after half-terms next week.

WEEK 8

In the eighth week of my final major project, I started by updating my trello as it is an important method of keeping track of things I need to do and what time I need to do them in. I created two blocks for the working on section of my trello, these two being “Map Design” and “Concept Art”. I gave both of these deadlines for the 28th of February, giving me a sense of urgency to finish these two sections of design. Thankfully, doing this did help me get these two done as on the Monday I managed to fully complete the concept art section of my final major project. I didn’t manage to get it finished on Week 7 so I had to finish it off this week. On the Tuesday I focused entirely on getting my map design to get it finished just before the deadline. I feel as if I could have put a bit more time into the map design section (add more detail to it), but I didn’t plan my time too well due to not using trello. I plan on using trello from now on to help me get things finished in a good amount of time.

WEEK 9

On the 9th week of my final major project, I created a smart target last week that I read saying that I would complete my entire block out in the 9th week. I set the deadline on my trello and got to work on my block out. Since I focused the entire week on the block out/writing about the block out and nothing else, I managed to get it finished just in time within the 9th week. After finishing the block out I put screenshots onto my blog and wrote about certain important sections of my block out relating to my final major project. I finished off this week by updating my smart target saying that I did achieve finishing my block out within the deadline.

WEEK 10

In the 10th week of my final major project, I began working on my modular assets for the environment. On Monday I spent the entire day just focusing on modelling each modular asset for the space station. I did manage to finish creating the assets on the Monday which is good because this gave me a lot of time to focus on texturing each asset/put a lot of detail into them. On the Tuesday of the 10th week I focused on texturing the assets. Unfortunately, it was my first time attempting to unwrap the model to texture it, so I did spend quite a lot of time that try trying to figure out how to unwrap models. Thankfully, I did manage to get the textures done on the Tuesday allowing me to put them on the models and finish off the modular assets.

WEEK 11

On the 11th week of my final major project, it was a progress week so we were only in for one day of that week, unless you were behind. If you were behind you would have to come in the other days of the week to catch up on your work. Luckily, I was not behind with my work so I only had to go in for one day. On that day, I was able to put in some of my modular assets into my project. Unfortunately, I struggled putting in the modular assets because I did not do the measurements correctly for them, so I had to resize them in the unreal engine. Next time I create a model, I plan on doing the correct measurements for it.

WEEK 12 (PROGRESS WEEK)

On the 12th week of my final major project I tasked my self with making a door for my environment. I also tasked myself with adding a few more of my modular models to it. Thankfully, I managed to make the doors within the wake however, I did not manage to finish putting in the all the modular assets into my environment, which means I need to plan my time a bit better. I was taught by a friend this week on how to make the door work. So I set myself a target to all every door working in my environment by the end of week 13.

WEEK 13

On the 13th week of my final major project, I tasked myself with finishing off programming each door and finishing off my modular assets. Unfortunately, I was ill on the first day of the week, which is usually the longest day of college, meaning I could have missed out on a big chunk of work. Luckily, I went out of my way to do work at home however, I focused on doing something that I did not plan to do (it was not on my trello). I focused on creating a skybox for my environment, which required quite a bit of programming (something I am not good at). It took me a while to create the skybox meaning I had less time to work on the other things I had planned to do in the week. I feel like I could have planned my time better this week.

WEEK 14

On the fourteenth week of my final major project, we had two weeks away from college. Unfortunately, I did not do any work over the holidays, which is something I should have done and I hope to do in the future. We missed the Monday of the 14th week due to it being a bank holiday Monday and I did not do work on that day too, another thing I need to improve on. On the Tuesday I was unable to do work at college because the PC I was using could not open the Unreal engine. All of this happening made me feel like I shouldn’t add deadlines on trello, so I don’t feel forced to rush things. I should also do work at home. I set myself more targets to hopefully get done next week, when I have the Monday to work on it.

WEEK 15

On the 15th week of my final major project, I began by getting to work on my project, I started creating modular walls and floors for certain rooms of the space station environment. I managed to get these done in a good amount of time however, I thought the textures could have been a lot better so I got some help from a friend. He helped me apply bump map textures and ambient occlusion textures etc, to the model. Doing this added a new level of detail to the textures and made it look nicer overall. On the second day of the 15th week, I worked on two different things, both of them required a decent amount of blueprint programming in the unreal engine. Unfortunately, it took a lot of trail and error but I managed to create a sun and a holographic sign. I feel like this week went better than most of the previous weeks of my final major project.

WEEK 16

On the 16th week of my final major project, I began the week by working on my project at home due to the fact, we weren’t in college for Monday and Tuesday. In this time, I created a pipe asset for my project. I deliberately didn’t texture them because I received feedback from a peer that I should try out the stock unreal materials. The models came out quite well in my project. Something that I improved was the lighting because of more feedback I received from a peer. I made the lights a bit darkers to add a more spooky vibe to my environment, it also made it look more abandoned.

WEEK 17

On the 17th week of my final major project, I began the week by working on multiple models for my environment. The first model I made was a construction sign. I ran into a few issues whilst making this sign. The first issue I had was making the triangular shape of the model however, I managed to get help from a peer who knew how to create a triangle model. The other issue I ran into was applying the texture to the triangle model, this is because it had multiple polygons on the face of the triangle which messed with the texture. I managed to get this fixed with the help of my tutor. The other models I created were all office models. These models were an, desk, projector, chair and the modular walls and light. Thankfully, I didn’t run into any issues whilst making these models unlike the construction sign.

FINAL WEEK

On the final week of my final major project, I managed to get my environment fully finished. Unfortunately, due to time constraints from the project, I was unable to add every asset that I wanted to add in as I did not plan my time too well. I should have planned my time a lot better. After I had finished my environment, we were told to create a final evaluation and write about feedback we had received that helped us improve our project. I wrote the final evaluation with no issues, as I created an environment for my last project, so I wrote about similar things in the final evaluation (2.2k WORDS). For the feedback section, I recalled moments where I received criticism from peers about certain things in my environment that could be improved. I had no issues with writing about both of these things. I ended the week by updating my trello to say that I have completed most things.
